"In my stylized waterfront landscapes I try to capture the poetic beauty of air, water, light. These compositions are realistic and yet surreal, both traditional and modern. I work with images of real objects and set them within the context of the painting - it's about the evident and the intangible.
Follow your Heart!"    SAB

ESSAY

LANDSCAPE ILLUMINATED

Sabine Liva paints her world in sure strokes of poetry.  Steps from her studio, the Toronto
waterfront goes about a busy life of boats and swans and spectacular skies.  Sabine's subtly confident brush hovers and dips, capturing for us the drifting sheen of morning mists, the lonely echoes of shoreline gulls, the glimmer of pebbles washed perfectly smooth.

These grand portraits of lake and sky whisper primal secrets from the walls.  The colours are warmly organic; mute masses of cloud and stone, lilting tints of wind and starlight.  Silhouettes of boats and doves - the shadowed shapes of simple things - appear, hover and fade away with the whims and dreams of tides.  Early fog, lace veils, spray and stone, wood and wave are here in balanced measures, simply placed.

These are joyful paintings, an art of love for the landscape that inspired them.  In this powerful new collection of work, Sabine shows us once again the undeniable truth of the words that guide her.
Truly,
the world is beautiful.

"Sabine,
Thank you for introducing me to the wisdom and timelessness of your art.

Beyond the beauty of your work, I left struggling with why your abstract paintings affect me so emotionally.

My theory is they evoke archetypal memories as defined by Jungian psychology.  I experience your strata as going back through layers of time and earth. The flora images seem prehistoric.
One example is your repeated use of the gondola form.  It struck me it had folkloric meaning, perhaps a vessel for the soul to a Valhalla-like place?

I am not asking you for explanations.

I wanted to simply share the success of your work as a communication medium, that so powerfully engages me in finding personal meaning.  For me, this is the highest order of success for an abstract artist.

Your show nourished my soul, I look forward to your next one."
